RCG designed the renovation and expansion of the Jewish Museum of Maryland; the museum is located between two historic synagogues listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The expanded museum acts as an architectural link between the two historic synagogues and as a social link between the present and the rich cultural heritage of the neighborhood. The enlarged museum is designed to accommodate larger exhibits as well as larger audiences, and it provides a better equipped, more spacious and better organized building for the museum’s activities and collections. The museum expansion has two components: a west addition which contains new entry, exhibit gallery and other public spaces and an east addition which contains staff work areas and collections storage. The west addition brings the building face and entrance out to the street, reinforcing the street and providing a strong, new identity for the institution. The expanded facility has allowed the Museum to expand educational offerings and community outreach. Extensive programs are offered in art and history. Additionally, the Museum hosts a widely popular film series and a continuing lecture series. The Museum’s galleries contain works of art, photography, clothing, rare books and documents, oral history and memorabilia. The Museum has grown to be the largest single collection of regional Jewish Americana in the U.S. Extensive resources support an active research, programs and publications.
