RCG has designed the first new performance venue in 25 years at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, the nation's premier performing art center.

In its originating statute, the Center is mandated by the Congress to be a leader in national performing arts education policy and programs. The Center's Education Department creates extensive education programming, including developing and presenting original and innovative performing arts and educational programs for children, youth, families, adults, and educators designed specifically to foster an appreciation and understanding of the performing arts. Creation of a new and appropriate performance venue was essential to truly fulfilling that mandate.

The new 320 seat Family Theater is designed as a multi-purpose hall designed to accommodate drama, dance and limited music performances. The theater is suitably intimate and warm, rendered in wood, metals and saturated colors. The design also includes new public restrooms, wing space, scenery loading, dressing rooms and office space.

The new theatre occupies space formerly devoted to the AFI Film Theatre which was demolished in its entirety. Renovations include all new mechanical, electrical, theatrical and sound systems and will be constructed during full occupation of adjacent spaces.
