The nationally-ranked
School of Engineering at Morgan State University is comprised of the Clarence
M. Mitchell, Jr. Building (1) and the William Donald Schaefer Building
(2), both designed by RCG. The College offers accredited programs in industrial,
civil and electrical engineering to over 6000 national and international
students. The School also houses numerous research centers with agendas
in the environment, transportation, materials and information technology.
They include the Institute for Transportation, Center for Advanced Energy
Systems and Environmental Control Technologies, Engineering Visualization
and Semiconductor Characterization Group and the Center of Microwave/Satellite
and RF Engineering.
The two buildings
total 125,000 sf and contain 22 teaching labs, 17 labs for graduate and
faculty research, classrooms, seminar rooms, a 300-seat lecture hall,
departmental library, computer rooms, clean room, lounges and offices.
The buildings are
integrated with advanced audio-visual and telecommunication technology
and are designed for flexibility with laboratories and shafts configured
for future conversions and renovations. The major circulation spine serves
as a "public street", linking major activities of the building and providing
students and faculty opportunities for impromptu interactions. The spine,
with entrances at either end, provides a clear understanding of the building's
organization.
The
project was recipient of two AIA design awards by RCG.
