RCG has completed several important projects for the Peabody Institute of Music of The Johns Hopkins University, one of our nation’s most renowned music schools, including the new 63,000 sf Arthur Friedheim Music Library and Academic Building (A). The project involved the creation of a new building behind the facades of four historic town houses on the Institute’s campus in Baltimore’s Historic Mount Vernon District. Smaller scaled spaces are integrated into the historic houses maintaining the townhouse character of the existing buildings. The building houses the school’s 100,000 volume music library with state-of-the-art A/V facilities, more than sixty individual and group practice rooms, three dance studios, student lounge, administrative offices and a new mechanical plant with centralized boilers and chillers. The library also houses the Peabody Archives which includes rare books and document storage as well as display of fragile and historic artifacts in the Galleria Piccola. The archives document the history of the Peabody Institution, the first major cultural institution in an American city. The Friedberg Concert Hall (B) project consisted of a combination of analysis and renovations. Architectural improvements included the acoustical isolation and refinishing of the entire acoustical shell. A convertible orchestra pit, with mechanized lifts and pit cover, was also provided. Spectator sight lines were studied and adjusted while seating for 800 was replaced. Accomodations for the disabled were also provided. Audio and visual systems for recording and television were added, as well as new HVAC, lighting and rigging systems. In addition to the renovated performance space, new facilities included a recording studio, dressing rooms, a shop and other support spaces for the Hall.
